Case Study: Hermes Pharma
Austrian company Hermes Pharma is a leading international supplier of high-quality medicines and medical products. The company specialises in soluble preparations, including effervescent tablets and powders, medical chewing gums and chewable tablets.
Challenge
Hermes Pharma wanted to implement a new telecommunications infrastructure following the expansion of its manufacturing plant in Wolfsberg. The company wanted a solution that would cover voice and data communications and integrate its proposed new IP-enabled plant machinery. The manufacturing process requires high standards of cleanliness and takes place in rooms lined with specially coated metal sheets which can potentially affect the wireless network. NextiraOne had to undertake detailed planning to be able to implement the wireless network successfully.
Solution
NextiraOne’s solution for Hermes Pharma created a communications infrastructure that not only provided a data network, but also included the entire voice communications platform for the Wolfsberg site and the headquarters in Vienna via the Wireless LAN: the Voice over WLAN platform is the key to the integration of both data and voice communications over the network.
More than 200 access points, switches and routers connect the machines, networks and telephones for the staff of Hermes Pharma. Data transmission is protected through the use of the security standard WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2).
The underlying integration solution - My Cellular Extension (MyCE) from Alcatel-Lucent - transforms the employee’s Nokia mobile phone into an extension of the IP handset and allows use of all features and applications such as forwarding, call forwarding or conferencing through a “One Business Number” concept.
Mobility outside the company is provided by using GSM integration to switch from the internal wireless LAN to GSM when they leave the site.
